CPCS

Construction Plant Competence Scheme

What is CPCS

CPCS stands for Construction Plant Competence Scheme and it was launched in 2003. It is a standard which measures the competency of plant operators in the UK. The scheme is now operated by NOCN (National Open College Network) Job Cards. Gaining a CPCS qualification provides proof that you have the appropriate training and skill to carry out your work.

CPCS is a very popular card and widely recognised by many organisations around the UK.

There are two types of card we can offer which are issued by CPCS:

CPCS Red Card

This card shows you have been tested to meet CPCS standards but competency and experience is still to be proven.

CPCS Blue Card

This card shows your competency as a plant operator. This is achieved by completing a Level 2 NVQ in Plant Operations.

Do I need a CPCS card?

If you are a plant operator working in the construction industry in the UK you will most likely need a CPCS card, though not all employers insist upon it. Most major construction contractors in the UK now insist upon CPCS to prove competency but many employers who operate in non-construction environments (such as factories, warehouses or loading docks) will accept other competency schemes. It is best to check with your employer which certifications you will need to perform your job.

Card Types and How to Gain Yours

The two types of CPCS cards are the Red Trained Operator Card and the Blue Competent Operator Card.

You get a Red Trained Operator card by completing the CPCS Theory and Practical Technical Test with a CPCS accredited Training Provider like us. The card lasts for two years and cannot be renewed. To keep your card you must upgrade it to a Blue Competent Operator Card by completing a relevant Level 2 NVQ within the two year validity period.

The standards for plant operations are changing all the time, so you will have to carry on proving your competence by moving on to a Blue Competent Operator Card, then renewing that card when it expires.
